GST Registration Checklist for New Businesses in 2026
Starting a new business in India almost always brings you face to face with one question early on: do I need GST registration, and if so, how soon? Turnover thresholds, the nature of your supply, and whether you plan to sell online all affect the answer.
Businesses supplying goods beyond Rs. 40 lakh in most states, or services beyond Rs. 20 lakh, must register under GST. The threshold drops further for special category states, and registration is mandatory regardless of turnover for inter-state supply, e-commerce sellers and a handful of other notified categories.
Before you apply, keep your PAN, Aadhaar, business address proof and bank details ready. Companies and LLPs will also need a digital signature certificate for the authorised signatory. Having these organised in advance is the single biggest factor in getting your GSTIN without back-and-forth queries from the department.
Once registered, the real work begins: monthly or quarterly return filing, input tax credit reconciliation, and staying on top of e-way bill requirements if you're moving goods. Building these habits from day one saves considerable stress later.
